How to Pick a Dental Hygienist College near Carefree Arizona

Carefree AZ dental hygienist cleaning patient's teethSelecting the right dental hygienist college near Carefree AZ is an important initial step toward launching your new career in dentistry. But prior to making your selection, you need to examine and compare your school options. There is much more to performing your due diligence than selecting the training with the least expensive tuition or enrolling in the school that is closest to your residence. There are other significant issues to consider as well, such as the program’s accreditation and reputation. Your initial step is to decide which of the 2 specializations you are most interested in getting training for, which may depend on the amount of time and money that you are willing to invest. The most common dental assistant program normally takes about one year to complete for a certificate or diploma. Meanwhile, dental hygienists usually earn an Associate Degree, which can take anywhere from 2 to 3 years to accomplish. Obviously with the prolonged training of a dental hygienist comes more cost. We will talk about all of these issues and supplemental questions that you should be asking the programs you are assessing later in this article. But first, let’s explore the duties of both dental hygienists and assistants and the training options available.

The Job of a Dental Hygienist

Carefree AZ dental hygienist assisting dentistWhen contrasting the job of a dental hygienist to that of an assistant, the biggest difference is undoubtedly that the dental hygienist works more independently. As earlier mentioned, the dental assistant works with and assists the dentists and the practice. Hygienists, while also supporting the Carefree AZ practice, work with the patients more on an individual basis. They are usually the first person a patient sees when called from the waiting area. They examine every patient’s teeth and gums and present their results to the dentists. They may also perform basic procedures. Based on state law, a hygienist’s duties can include:

  • Removing stains, tartar and plaque
  • Applying fluoride treatments
  • Polishing teeth and applying sealants
  • Educating patients about oral care
  • Taking X-rays and developing film
  • Applying fillings and removing sutures

To qualify for licensing in nearly all states, dental hygienists must have graduated from a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA) accredited dental hygiene program. They also must pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination as well as any state licensing examinations. Once they have fulfilled these requirements they are deemed fully licensed and can add the “RDH” designation to their names, standing for Registered Dental Hygienist.

The Job of Dental Assistants

training as a dental hygienist in Carefree AZDental assistants are an important component of any Carefree AZ dental practice and can carry out a myriad of duties. Their main job description is to provide assistance to the dentists and the administrative staff. In other words, to help keep the practice running successfully. Some dental assistants opt to specialize and acquire certification in a specific area, such as orthodontics. However the majority of assistants carry out any duty that they are called upon to complete, such as:

  • Scheduling and verifying appointments
  • Prepping patients for teeth treatments and cleanings
  • Preparing and sterilizing instruments for dentists
  • Using suction equipment to clear patients’ mouths
  • Handing instruments to dentists during procedures
  • Prepping X-ray machines and handling X-rays
  • Ordering office and dental supplies

Certification and licensing requirements for dental assistants deviate by state, so check with the Arizona dental board for your state’s policies. Assistants working with X-ray machines more than likely will have to be licensed and certified. Most dental assistants who are either required or decide to become certified take the Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) examination offered by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).

Dental Hygienist and Assistant Education Options

Dental assistant programs are available at Carefree AZ area community colleges along with trade or vocational schools. The most frequent credential attained is the certificate, which ordinarily takes about 1 year to complete. There are fewer Associate Degree programs available, and they furnish a more extensive education, including general subjects in addition to the dental assistant courses. Because of the additional responsibility as compared to an assistant, dental hygienists working in dental practices are usually required to have an Associate Degree in dental hygiene. These programs can take anywhere from two to as long as three years to finish and must be accredited by the CDA in almost every state. They are also offered in Carefree AZ area community colleges and technical schools. Regardless of whether you are interested in training as a dental hygienist or assistant, there will be a clinical aspect to the training also. Many programs also offer internships with local dentists or dental practices.

Dental Hygienist Online Classes

attending dental hygienist school online in Carefree AZSelecting an online dental hygienist school might be a viable alternative for receiving your training. Just remember that the classes will not be totally online, since there will be a clinical component to your training. But the balance of your classes will be accessible by means of your personal computer in the convenience of your Carefree AZ home or elsewhere on your laptop or tablet. For those working while going to college, online dental classes make education far more accessible. Many may even have lower tuition costs than their on-campus counterparts. And added expenses for items like commuting, books and school supplies may be reduced also. The practical training can typically be performed at an area dental practice or in an on-campus lab. With both the clinical and online training, everything necessary to receive the appropriate education is furnished. If you have the dedication for this mode of education, you may find that enrolling in an online dental hygienist program is the right option for you.

Issues to Cover With Dental Hygienist Colleges

Once you have decided on the dental specialization and kind of credential you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of comparing Arizona programs and schools. As we discussed at the opening of this article, many prospective students start by looking at the cost and the location of the colleges. Perhaps they search for several online alternatives as well. Even though these may be important initial factors to consider, there are several additional questions that you need to address to the Carefree AZ area programs you are comparing in order to arrive at an informed decision. To start that process, we have included a list of questions to assist you with your evaluation and final selection of the best dental hygienist college for you.

Is the Dental School Accredited? There are several valid reasons why you should only enroll in an accredited dental hygienist school. If you are planning to become licensed or certified, then accreditation is a requirement in nearly all states. To qualify to take the Certified Dental Assistant examination, your dental college must be accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA). Accreditation also helps ensure that the education you receive is comprehensive and of the highest quality. Employers in Carefree AZ frequently desire or require that new hires are graduates of accredited schools. And finally, if you are requesting financial aid or a student loan, often they are not available for non-accredited Arizona colleges.

Is The Appropriate Dental Program Offered? You can elect to train to become a dental hygienist or a dental assistant, just make certain that the Arizona college you choose offers the program that you want. For the assistant program, the alternatives are to earn either a certificate or an Associate Degree. In order to earn a living as a hygienist, the majority of Carefree AZ dental offices require an Associate Degree in dental hygiene. More advanced degrees, although not prevalent, are offered. However, keep in mind that even if a school has an excellent reputation and accreditation does not mean all of its programs do as well. For example, an accredited school may have a strong accredited dental assistant program, but might have a weaker or non-accredited hygienist program. So if you are just interested in a dental hygiene degree, obviously it would not be the best school for you.

Is Adequate Practical Training Included? Practical or clinical training is a vital component of every dental training program. This is true for the online school options also. A number of dental colleges have partnerships with regional dental offices and clinics that furnish practical training for their students. It’s not only imperative that the program you choose provides sufficient clinical hours but also provides them in the kind of practice that you ultimately would like to work in. For example, if you are interested in a career in pediatric dentistry, make sure that the Carefree AZ college you choose offers clinical rotation in a local dental practice that focuses on dental care for children.

Is There an Internship Program? Find out if the dental programs you are considering sponsor internship programs. Internships are undoubtedly the ideal method to obtain hands-on, clinical experience in a professional Carefree AZ dental practice. They help students to transition from the theoretical to the practical. They can also help students create working relationships in the professional dental community. And they are attractive on resumes also.

Is Job Placement Support Furnished? Many graduating students of dental hygiene programs require assistance obtaining their first job. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs, and what their job placement rates are. Programs with high job placement rates are likely to have good reputations within the Carefree AZ dental profession in addition to broad networks of contacts where they can position their students for internships or employment.

Are the Classrooms Small? Find out from the Arizona schools you are reviewing how large typically their classrooms are. The smaller classes usually provide a more intimate setting for training where students have greater access to the instructors. Conversely, large classes can be impersonal and provide little individualized instruction. If practical, find out if you can monitor a few classes at the school that you are most interested in so that you can experience first hand the degree of interaction between teachers and students before enrolling.

What is the Overall Expense of the Program? Dental hygiene training can differ in cost depending on the length of the program and the volume of practical training provided. Other variables, such as the reputations of the schools and if they are private or public also have an impact. But besides the tuition there are other substantial expenses which can add up. They can include expenses for such things as commuting and textbooks as well as school equipment, materials and supplies. So when examining the cost of colleges, remember to add all of the expenses related to your education. The majority of colleges have financial assistance departments, so be sure to find out what is available as far as grants, loans and scholarships in Carefree AZ.

Are the Classes Convenient? Before selecting a dental college, you must verify that the hygienist program provides classes that suit your schedule. This is particularly true if you continue working while acquiring your education and have to attend classes near your Carefree AZ home at nights or on weekends. And even if you choose an online college, you will still have to schedule your clinical training classes. Also, while making your inquiries, ask what the make-up procedure is if you should need to miss any classes due to illness, work or family issues.

Why Did You Desire to Become a Dental Hygienist?

When getting ready to interview for a Dental Hygienist job, it's a good idea to review questions you might be asked. Among the questions that recruiters often ask Dental Hygienist prospects is "What made you decide on Hygiene as a profession?". What the interviewer is trying to discover is not just the personal reasons you might have for becoming a Dental Hygienist, but also what qualities and abilities you possess that make you good at what you do. You will undoubtedly be asked questions pertaining specifically to Hygiene, in addition to a certain number of routine interview questions, so you need to prepare some strategies about how you want to answer them. Given that there are several variables that go into choosing a career, you can answer this fundamental question in a number of ways. When formulating an answer, attempt to include the reasons the work appeals to you as well as the abilities you have that make you an exceptional Dental Hygienist and the ideal candidate for the job. Don't attempt to memorize an answer, but jot down several concepts and talking points that pertain to your personal experiences and strengths. Going over sample answers can help you to develop your own thoughts, and provide ideas of what to include to impress the interviewer.

A Bit About Carefree Arizona

Carefree, Arizona

Carefree is a town in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population of the town is 3,363.[3]

Characterised as an upscale[5] residential area, Carefree was conceived in the mid-1950s by business partners K.T. Palmer and Tom Darlington as a master-planned community. Land sales commenced in 1955 and homebuilding started in 1958. Carefree was incorporated in 1984 to avoid annexation by neighboring Scottsdale.[6]

The Carefree sundial, designed by architect Joe Wong and solar engineer John I. Yellott,[7] was erected in the Sundial Circle plaza in 1959 and claims to be the "third largest sundial in the Western Hemisphere". The sundial, which points to the North Star, is made from a steel frame and covered in anodized copper. It measures 90 feet (27 m) in diameter. The metal gnomon, the shadow-casting portion of the dial, stands 35 feet (11 m) above the plaza and extends 72 feet (22 m).[8]
