How to Find the Right Dental Hygienist School near Westville Oklahoma

Westville OK dental hygienist cleaning patient's teethSelecting the ideal dental hygienist program near Westville OK is an important initial step toward beginning your new career in dentistry. But prior to making your selection, you need to evaluate and compare your school options. There is far more to completing your due diligence than choosing the school with the lowest tuition or enrolling in the college that is nearest to your residence. There are other crucial issues to take into account also, for instance the program’s accreditation and reputation. Your initial step is to decide which of the two specializations you are most interested in receiving training for, which may be contingent on the amount of time and money that you have to commit. The most common dental assistant program normally takes about one year to complete for a diploma or certificate. On the other hand, dental hygienists usually earn an Associate Degree, which can take anywhere from 2 to 3 years to accomplish. Obviously with the prolonged training of a dental hygienist comes more cost. We will cover all of these concerns and additional questions that you need to be asking the programs you are looking at later in this article. But first, let’s explore the duties of both dental hygienists and assistants and the training options provided.

The Duties of a Dental Hygienist

Westville OK dental hygienist assisting dentistWhen contrasting the duties of a dental assistant to that of a hygienist, the biggest difference is undoubtedly that the dental hygienist works more independently. As earlier mentioned, the dental assistant works with and assists the practice and the dentists. Hygienists, while also supporting the Westville OK practice, deal with the patients more on an individual basis. They are typically the initial person a patient interacts with when called from the waiting area. They examine every patient’s teeth and gums and report their results to the dentists. They may also perform basic procedures. Depending on state law, a hygienist’s responsibilities can include:

  • Removing tartar, stains and plaque
  • Applying fluoride treatments
  • Applying sealants and polishing teeth
  • Instructing patients about oral care
  • Taking X-rays and developing film
  • Removing sutures and applying fillings

In order to be licensed in almost all states, dental hygienists must graduate from a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA) accredited dental hygiene program. They must also pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Exam as well as any state licensing examinations. When they have fulfilled these requirements they are considered fully licensed and may add the “RDH” designation to their names, signifying Registered Dental Hygienist.

The Function of Dental Assistants

training as a dental hygienist in Westville OKDental assistants are an integral component of any Westville OK dental practice and can perform a wide range of functions. Their main job description is to give support to the admin staff and the dentists. Or simply put, to help keep the practice operating successfully. Some dental assistants elect to specialize and receive certification in a particular area, for example orthodontics. Even so most assistants perform any job that they are asked to complete, including:

  • Setting and confirming appointments
  • Readying patients for teeth treatments and cleanings
  • Sterilizing and preparing dental instruments
  • Clearing patients’ mouths with suction equipment
  • Giving instruments to dentists during procedures
  • Prepping X-ray machines and handling X-rays
  • Purchasing office and dental supplies

Licensing and certification requirements for dental assistants deviate by state, so check with the Oklahoma dental board for your state’s policies. Assistants handling X-ray machines more than likely will need to be licensed and certified. Many dental assistants who are either required or decide to become certified take the Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) examination offered by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).

Dental Hygienist & Assistant Training Options

Dental assistant programs are provided at Westville OK area junior colleges along with vocational or technical schools. The most common credential attained is the certificate, which usually takes about a year to finish. There are less Associate Degree programs available, and they furnish a more comprehensive education, including general subjects in addition to the dental assistant classes. Due to the increased responsibility as compared to an assistant, dental hygienists employed in dental offices are usually required to have an Associate Degree in dental hygiene. These programs can require anywhere from 2 to as long as 3 years to finish and must be accredited by the CDA in nearly every state. They are also offered in Westville OK area vocational schools and community colleges. Regardless of whether you are pursuing training as a dental assistant or hygienist, there will be a clinical component to the training also. Many programs also sponsor internships with local dentists or dental practices.

Online Dental Hygienist Programs

attending dental hygienist school online in Westville OKSelecting an online dental hygienist college can be a good option for receiving your training. Just keep in mind that the classes will not be completely online, since there will be a clinical component to your training. But the rest of your classes will be available via your desktop computer in the comfort of your Westville OK home or elsewhere on your tablet or laptop. For those continuing to work while going to college, online dental programs make education a lot more obtainable. Many may even charge lower tuition costs than their traditional competitors. And additional expenses for items like books, school supplies and commuting may be reduced also. The practical training can usually be performed at an area dental office or in an on-campus lab. With both the clinical and online training, everything needed to obtain the appropriate education is provided. If you have the dedication for this style of learning, you might find that enrolling in an dental hygienist online college is the best choice for you.

What to Ask Dental Hygienist Schools

When you have decided on the dental specialization and type of credential you wish to attain, you can begin the process of comparing Oklahoma programs and schools. As we covered at the beginning of this article, many potential students start by looking at the cost and the location of the colleges. Perhaps they look for some online alternatives also. Although these may be important initial points to consider, there are several additional questions that you need to address to the Westville OK area schools you are looking at in order to arrive at an informed decision. To start that process, we have provided a list of questions to assist you with your evaluation and final selection of the ideal dental hygienist school for you.

Is the Dental College Accredited? There are several valid reasons why you should only select an accredited dental hygienist program. If you are going to become licensed or certified, then accreditation is a requirement in virtually all states. To qualify to take the Certified Dental Assistant exam, your dental school must be accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA). Accreditation also helps guarantee that the training you get is of the highest quality and comprehensive. Employers in Westville OK frequently desire or require that new hires are graduates of accredited programs. And finally, if you are requesting financial aid or a student loan, frequently they are not available for non-accredited Oklahoma colleges.

Is The Proper Dental Program Offered? You can elect to train to become a dental assistant or a dental hygienist, just confirm that the Oklahoma college you decide on offers the program that’s right for you. For the assistant program, the choices are to earn either a certificate or an Associate Degree. In order to earn a living as a hygienist, most Westville OK dental offices require an Associate Degree in dental hygiene. More advanced degrees, although not prevalent, are offered. However, bear in mind that even if a college has a good reputation and accreditation does not mean all of its programs do as well. For example, an accredited school may have a strong accredited dental assistant program, but may have a weaker or non-accredited hygienist program. So if you are just interested in a dental hygiene degree, naturally it would not be the best college for you.

Is Enough Practical Training Provided? Practical or clinical training is an essential portion of every dental training program. This is true for the online college options as well. A number of dental colleges have relationships with local dental offices and clinics that provide practical training for their students. It’s not only imperative that the college you enroll in offers adequate clinical hours but also provides them in the type of practice that you ultimately want to work in. For example, if you are interested in a career in pediatric dentistry, make sure that the Westville OK program you choose offers clinical rotation in a regional dental practice that focuses on dental care for children.

Are Internships Available? Ask if the dental programs you are evaluating have internship programs. Internships are probably the ideal means to get hands-on, clinical experience in a professional Westville OK dental practice. They make it easier for students to transition from the theoretical to the practical. They can also help students form working relationships in the professional dental community. And they look good on resumes too.

Is Job Placement Assistance Provided? Most students that have graduated from dental hygiene programs need help landing their first job. Find out if the programs you are looking at have job placement programs, and what their job placement rates are. Programs with high job placement rates probably have excellent reputations within the Westville OK dental community as well as extensive networks of contacts where they can refer their students for internships or employment.

Are Classrooms Small? Ask the Oklahoma schools you are looking at how big on average their classes are. The smaller classes tend to provide a more intimate environment for learning where students have increased access to the instructors. Conversely, large classes can be impersonal and offer little one-on-one instruction. If practical, find out if you can sit in on a few classes at the college that you are most interested in in order to witness first hand the degree of interaction between instructors and students before enrolling.

What is the Total Expense of the Program? Dental hygiene schools can vary in cost depending on the length of the program and the amount of clinical training provided. Other factors, for example the reputations of the colleges and whether they are private or public also come into play. But along with the tuition there are other substantial expenses which can add up. They can include expenses for such things as commuting and textbooks as well as school equipment, materials and supplies. So when analyzing the cost of colleges, don’t forget to include all of the expenses related to your education. Most colleges have financial assistance offices, so be sure to check out what is offered as far as loans, grants and scholarships in Westville OK.

Are the Classes Accessible? Before selecting a dental school, you need to verify that the hygienist program furnishes classes that fit your schedule. This is particularly true if you will be working while acquiring your education and must attend classes near your Westville OK home at nights or on weekends. And even if you enroll in an online program, you will still need to schedule your practical training classes. Also, while addressing your concerns, ask what the make-up practice is if you should need to miss any classes due to illness, work or family responsibilities.

Why Did You Want to Be a Dental Hygienist?

When preparing to interview for a Dental Hygiene job, it's important to reflect on questions you may be asked. One of the questions that recruiters often ask Dental Hygiene candidates is "What made you choose Hygiene as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to discover is not just the private reasons you might have for becoming a Dental Hygienist, but additionally what attributes and skills you have that make you outstanding at what you do. You will probably be asked questions relating specifically to Hygiene, along with a significant number of general interview questions, so you should prepare several approaches about how you would like to answer them. Considering there are several factors that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this primary question in a multitude of ways. When formulating an answer, aim to include the reasons the profession appeals to you as well as the talents you have that make you an excellent Dental Hygienist and the best candidate for the position. Don't make an effort to memorize a response, but take down some ideas and talking points that pertain to your personal strengths and experiences. Reviewing sample answers can help you to develop your own concepts, and inspire ideas of what to discuss to impress the recruiter.

A Bit About Westville Oklahoma

Westville, Oklahoma

Westville is a town in Adair County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,639 at the 2010 census, an increase of 2.7 percent from 1,596 at the 2000 census.[3]

Before statehood, Westville was a community in the Goingsnake District of the Cherokee Nation. The town was founded in 1895, when the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad (later acquired by the Kansas City Southern Railroad) was constructing a rail line from Kansas City to the Gulf Coast. The Westville post office was established on November 18, 1895. The town name honored Jim West, who lived one mile south of nearby Cincinnati, Arkansas, and whose son, Jim West, Jr., was an attorney for the Kansas City Southern Railway.[4]

When Adair County was formed in 1907, Westville was identified as the county seat, due partly to its location at the intersection of two major railroads: the Kansas City Southern Railway and the St. Louis – San Francisco Railway.[5] The county seat was moved to Stilwell in 1910.[6]

Westville is located at 35°59′29″N 94°34′16″W / 35.99139°N 94.57111°W / 35.99139; -94.57111 (35.991414, -94.571088).[7] It is 13 miles (21 km) north of Stilwell and 15 miles (24 km) south of Siloam Springs, Arkansas.[4]
