Wonder Lake IL dental hygienist cleaning patient's teethPicking the right dental hygienist school near Wonder Lake IL is an essential initial step toward beginning your new career in dentistry. But before you can make your choice, you need to evaluate and compare your school options. There is far more to doing your due diligence than picking the program with the lowest tuition or enrolling in the program that is closest to your home. There are other significant issues to consider also, such as the school’s reputation and accreditation. Your first step is to decide which of the two specialties you are most interested in receiving training for, which may be contingent on the amount of money and time that you have to commit. The most common dental assistant program normally takes about one year to complete for a certificate or diploma. Meanwhile, dental hygienists usually earn an Associate Degree, which can take anywhere from two to three years to finish. Naturally with the lengthier training of a dental hygienist comes more cost. We will explore all of these factors and additional questions that you need to be asking the colleges you are evaluating later in this article. But first, let’s review the roles of both dental hygienists and assistants and the training options offered.

The Job of Dental Hygienists

Wonder Lake IL dental hygienist assisting dentistWhen contrasting the job of a dental hygienist to that of an assistant, the most significant difference is probably that the dental hygienist works more independently. As previously discussed, the dental assistant works with and assists the dentists and the practice. Hygienists, while also assisting the Wonder Lake IL practice, work with the patients more on a one-to-one basis. They are typically the first person a patient encounters when called from the waiting room. They examine every patient’s gums and teeth and present their results to the dentists. They also may perform basic procedures. Depending on state law, a hygienist’s duties can include:

  • Removing stains, tartar and plaque
  • Applying fluoride treatments
  • Polishing teeth and applying sealants
  • Teaching patients about oral care
  • Taking X-rays and developing film
  • Removing sutures and applying fillings

In order to be licensed in almost all states, dental hygienists must have graduated from a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA) accredited dental hygiene program. They also must pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Exam in addition to passing any state licensure examinations. After they have fulfilled these requirements they are regarded as fully licensed and may add the “RDH” designation to their names, standing for Registered Dental Hygienist.

The Duties of a Dental Assistant

training as a dental hygienist in Wonder Lake ILDental assistants are an essential part of any Wonder Lake IL dental office and can perform a wide range of tasks. Their fundamental job description is to give assistance to the admin staff and the dentists. Or simply put, to help keep the practice operating successfully. A number of dental assistants choose to specialize and acquire certification in a particular area, for instance pediatrics. However most assistants perform any duty that they are called upon to complete, for example:

  • Scheduling and verifying appointments
  • Prepping patients for teeth treatments and cleanings
  • Preparing and sterilizing instruments for dentists
  • Using suction equipment to clear patients’ mouths
  • Supplying instruments to dentists during procedures
  • Preparing X-ray machines and processing X-rays
  • Purchasing dental and office supplies

Licensing and certification requirements for dental assistants differ by state, so consult with the Illinois dental board for your state’s policies. Assistants handling X-ray machines more than likely will need to be certified and licensed. Most dental assistants who are either required or opt to become certified take the Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) exam provided by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).

Dental Hygienist & Assistant Education Options

Dental assistant courses are available at Wonder Lake IL area junior colleges as well as vocational or technical schools. The most frequent credential attained is the certificate, which generally takes about a year to finish. There are less Associate Degree programs offered, and they provide a more extensive education, incorporating general subjects in addition to the dental assisting classes. As a result of the increased responsibility in contrast to an assistant, dental hygienists working in dental practices are often required to have an Associate Degree in dental hygiene. These programs can require anywhere from 2 to as long as 3 years to finish and must be accredited by the CDA in virtually every state. They are also offered in Wonder Lake IL area community colleges and technical schools. Regardless of whether you are interested in training as a dental hygienist or assistant, there will be a clinical aspect to the training also. Some programs also sponsor internships with local dentists or dental practices.

Dental Hygienist Online Classes

attending dental hygienist school online in Wonder Lake ILEnrolling in an online dental hygienist program may be a viable alternative for obtaining your training. Just keep in mind that the program will not be 100% online, since there will be a practical portion to your training. But the balance of your classes will be available via your personal computer in the comfort of your Wonder Lake IL home or anywhere else on your laptop or tablet. For those working while attending college, online dental classes make education a lot more accessible. Some may even have lower tuition fees than their traditional counterparts. And supplementary expenses for items like commuting, books and school supplies may be lessened as well. The clinical training can usually be completed at an area dental practice or in an on-campus lab. With both the clinical and online training, everything required to get the proper education is furnished. If you have the dedication for this style of education, you may find that attending an dental hygienist online school is the best choice for you.

Issues to Ask Dental Hygienist Schools

Once you have selected the dental specialization and kind of credential you wish to attain, you can start the procedure of comparing Illinois programs and schools. As we discussed at the opening of this article, a number of students start by checking out the cost and the location of the colleges. Possibly they search for some online alternatives also. Even though these are relevant initial factors to consider, there are a few additional questions that you need to address to the Wonder Lake IL area colleges you are looking at in order to make an informed decision. To start that process, we have furnished a list of questions to assist you with your evaluation and final selection of the best dental hygienist college for you.

Is the Dental College Accredited? There are several valid reasons why you should only select an accredited dental hygienist program. If you are going to become licensed or certified, then accreditation is a requirement in almost all states. To qualify to take the Certified Dental Assistant exam, your dental program must be accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA). Accreditation also helps establish that the training you get is of the highest quality and comprehensive. Employers in Wonder Lake IL often desire or require that new hires are graduates of accredited schools. And finally, if you are applying for financial aid or a student loan, usually they are not obtainable for non-accredited Illinois schools.

Is The Right Dental Program Offered? You can decide to train to become a dental assistant or a dental hygienist, just confirm that the Illinois college you select offers the program that’s right for you. For the assistant program, the alternatives are to enroll in a certificate program or earn an Associate Degree. In order to earn a living as a hygienist, a large number of Wonder Lake IL dental practices require an Associate Degree in dental hygiene. More advanced degrees, although not common, are offered. However, keep in mind that just because a school has an excellent reputation and accreditation does not mean all of its programs do as well. For example, an accredited college may have a solid accredited dental assistant program, but might have a weaker or non-accredited hygienist program. So if you are just interested in a dental hygiene degree, obviously it would not be the right school for you.

Is Sufficient Clinical Training Included? Practical or clinical training is a necessary part of every dental training program. This holds true for the online school options as well. Most dental schools have partnerships with local dental offices and clinics that furnish clinical training for their students. It’s not only essential that the school you choose offers sufficient clinical hours but also provides them in the kind of practice that you ultimately want to work in. For example, if you have an interest in a career in pediatric dentistry, verify that the Wonder Lake IL program you choose offers clinical rotation in a local dental office that focuses on dental treatment for children.

Are Internships Available? Find out if the dental schools you are exploring sponsor an internship program. Internships are probably the ideal method to receive hands-on, clinical experience in a real Wonder Lake IL dental practice. They make it easier for students to transition from the theoretical to the practical. They can also help students build professional relationships in the local dentistry community. And they are attractive on resumes too.

Is Job Placement Help Furnished? Most students that have graduated from dental hygiene colleges need help landing their first job. Find out if the colleges you are reviewing have job assistance programs, and what their job placement rates are. Programs with high job placement rates probably have excellent reputations within the Wonder Lake IL dental community as well as extensive networks of contacts where they can position their students for internships or employment.

Are Classrooms Smaller? Ask the Illinois schools you are evaluating how large on average their classes are. The smaller classes usually offer a more personal setting for training where students have greater access to the instructors. On the other hand, large classes can be impersonal and offer little individualized instruction. If practical, ask if you can monitor a few classes at the school that you are leaning toward in order to experience first hand the level of interaction between students and teachers before making a commitment.

What is the Total Cost of the Program? Dental hygiene training can vary in cost depending on the duration of the program and the amount of clinical training provided. Other factors, for instance the reputations of the schools and if they are private or public also have an impact. But besides the tuition there are other significant expenses which can add up. They can include expenses for such things as commuting and textbooks as well as school equipment, materials and supplies. So when analyzing the cost of schools, remember to include all of the costs associated with your education. The majority of colleges have financial aid departments, so be sure to ask what is available as far as loans, grants and scholarships in Wonder Lake IL.

Are the Classes Convenient? Before enrolling in a dental college, you need to confirm that the hygienist program furnishes classes that fit your schedule. This is especially true if you will be working while getting your education and have to attend classes near your Wonder Lake IL home at nights or on weekends. And even if you select an online school, you will still have to schedule your clinical training classes. Also, while addressing your concerns, ask what the make-up policy is if you should need to miss any classes due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
