Keams Canyon AZ dental hygienist cleaning patient's teethPicking the ideal dental hygienist training near Keams Canyon AZ is an important initial step toward launching your new career in dentistry. But prior to making your selection, you need to examine and compare your school options. There is much more to completing your due diligence than selecting the school with the most affordable tuition or enrolling in the program that is closest to your residence. There are other important issues to take into account also, including the college’s accreditation and reputation. Your initial step is to decide which of the 2 specializations you are most interested in receiving training for, which may be contingent on the amount of money and time that you have to commit. The most typical dental assistant program normally takes about 12 months to complete for a certificate or diploma. Meanwhile, dental hygienists usually earn an Associate Degree, which can take anywhere from two to three years to complete. Naturally with the more extensive training of a dental hygienist comes more expense. We will cover all of these concerns and additional questions that you need to be asking the colleges you are analyzing later in this article. But first, let’s explore the duties of both dental hygienists and assistants and the training options available.

The Duties of Dental Hygienists

Keams Canyon AZ dental hygienist assisting dentistWhen comparing the role of a dental hygienist to that of an assistant, the main difference is undoubtedly that the dental hygienist works more independently. As earlier mentioned, the dental assistant works with and in support of the dentists and the practice. Hygienists, while also assisting the Keams Canyon AZ practice, work with the patients more on an individual basis. They are frequently the first person a patient encounters when called from the waiting room. They examine every patient’s teeth and gums and report their findings to the dentists. They may also perform basic procedures. Depending on state law, a hygienist’s responsibilities can include:

  • Removing tartar, stains and plaque
  • Administering fluoride treatments
  • Polishing teeth and applying sealants
  • Educating patients about oral care
  • Taking X-rays and developing film
  • Removing sutures and applying fillings

In order to be licensed in nearly all states, dental hygienists must graduate from a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA) accredited dental hygiene program. They also must pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination as well as any state licensing examinations. After they have completed these requirements they are deemed fully licensed and can add the “RDH” designation to their names, standing for Registered Dental Hygienist.

The Duties of a Dental Assistant

training as a dental hygienist in Keams Canyon AZDental assistants are an integral part of any Keams Canyon AZ dental office and can carry out a wide range of tasks. Their principal job description is to give assistance to the dentists and the administrative staff. Or simply put, to help keep the practice running successfully. Some dental assistants choose to specialize and receive certification in a specific area, such as periodontics. Even so the majority of assistants carry out any duty that they are asked to complete, including:

  • Scheduling and verifying appointments
  • Readying patients for teeth treatments and cleanings
  • Preparing and sterilizing dental instruments
  • Clearing patients’ mouths with suction equipment
  • Providing instruments to dentists during procedures
  • Readying X-ray machines and handling X-rays
  • Purchasing office and dental supplies

Certification and licensing requirements for dental assistants differ by state, so check with the Arizona dental board for your state’s policies. Assistants handling X-ray machines most likely will have to be certified and licensed. Most dental assistants who are either required or elect to become certified take the Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) exam offered by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).

These programs can take anywhere from two to as long as three years to complete and must be accredited by the CDA in virtually every state. They are also offered in Keams Canyon AZ area vocational schools and community colleges. Whether you are interested in training as a dental hygienist or assistant, there will be a clinical component to the training as well. To start that process, we have furnished a list of questions to help you with your evaluation and final selection of the best dental hygienist college for you.

Is the Dental College Accredited? There are many valid reasons why you should only pick an accredited dental hygienist college. If you are going to become licensed or certified, then accreditation is a requirement in nearly all states. To qualify to take the Certified Dental Assistant exam, your dental program must be accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA). Accreditation also helps guarantee that the instruction you receive is comprehensive and of the highest quality. Employers in Keams Canyon AZ often prefer or require that new hires are graduates of accredited programs. And finally, if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, frequently they are not offered for non-accredited Arizona colleges.

Is The Correct Dental Program Offered? You can opt to train to become a dental hygienist or a dental assistant, just make certain that the Arizona college you select offers the program that you want. For the assistant program, the options are to enroll in a certificate program or earn an Associate Degree. If you want to have a career as a hygienist, a large number of Keams Canyon AZ dental practices require an Associate Degree in dental hygiene. More advanced degrees, although not common, are available. However, keep in mind that just because a college has an excellent reputation as well as accreditation does not mean all of its programs do as well. For example, an accredited school may have a strong accredited dental assistant program, but may have a weaker or non-accredited hygienist program. So if you are solely interested in a dental hygiene degree, naturally it would not be the right school for you.

Is Plenty of Practical Training Included? Clinical or practical training is a necessary portion of every dental training program. This holds true for the online college options as well. A number of dental programs have relationships with local dental offices and clinics that furnish practical training for their students. It’s not only important that the program you choose offers adequate clinical hours but also provides them in the type of practice that you subsequently want to work in. For example, if you have an interest in a career in pediatric dentistry, make sure that the Keams Canyon AZ college you enroll in offers clinical rotation in a regional dental office that specializes in dental treatment for children.

Is There an Internship Program? Find out if the dental programs you are considering sponsor an internship program. Internships are probably the best means to get hands-on, clinical experience in a professional Keams Canyon AZ dental practice. They make it easier for students to transition from the theoretical to the practical. They can also help students build working relationships in the professional dental community. And they look good on resumes as well.

Is Job Placement Help Offered? Most students that have graduated from dental hygiene schools need assistance obtaining their first job. Find out if the schools you are looking at have job assistance programs, and what their job placement rates are. Programs with higher job placement rates are likely to have good reputations within the Keams Canyon AZ dental community in addition to extensive networks of contacts where they can position their students for internships or employment.

Are Classrooms Small? Check with the Arizona schools you are evaluating how big typically their classrooms are. The smaller classes tend to offer a more intimate setting for training where students have greater access to the teachers. On the other hand, larger classes often are impersonal and offer little individualized instruction. If feasible, find out if you can attend a couple of classes at the college that you are most interested in in order to experience first hand the degree of interaction between teachers and students before making a commitment.

What is the Overall Cost of the Program? Dental hygiene schools can differ in cost based on the length of the program and the volume of practical training provided. Other variables, for example the reputations of the colleges and if they are public or private also have an impact. But in addition to the tuition there are other substantial costs which can add up. They can include expenses for such things as commuting and textbooks as well as school materials, equipment and supplies. So when comparing the cost of colleges, don’t forget to include all of the costs associated with your education. The majority of schools have financial aid offices, so make sure to find out what is available as far as grants, loans and scholarships in Keams Canyon AZ.

Are the Classes Accessible? Before selecting a dental college, you must make sure that the hygienist program furnishes classes that fit your schedule. This is especially true if you will be working while receiving your education and need to attend classes near your Keams Canyon AZ home at nights or on weekends. And even if you select an online school, you will still have to schedule your practical training classes. Also, while addressing your concerns, ask what the make-up practice is if you should need to miss any classes due to illness, work or family emergencies.

Keams Canyon, Arizona

Keams Canyon (Hopi: Pongsikya or Pongsikvi; Navajo: Lókʼaaʼdeeshjin) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Navajo County, Arizona, United States. The population was 260 at the 2000 census.

Pongsikya is a narrow box canyon named after a plant of edible greens that survived along the seasonal stream that drains from Antelope Mesa and flows through the three mile long canyon. Here William Keam, and then his cousin Thomas Keam,[3] operated a trading post during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. They served the Navajo Indians and opened the door to commercial trade for the Hopi Indians. The nearest trading post was some fifty miles away and Keam’s trading post was 13 miles east of the Hopi Indian’s settlements on First Mesa. With the opportunity for full year round trade nearby, the regional Indians quickly identified the canyon with the traders and the name Keams Canyon took hold.[4]

Keams Canyon is located at 35°48′46″N 110°12′15″W / 35.81278°N 110.20417°W / 35.81278; -110.20417 (35.812849, -110.204154).[5]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 9.3 square miles (24 km2), all of it land.
